The most common question patients ask after their procedure is: "Is this normal?" Redness, crusting, shedding, and a period where it looks like nothing happened — all of it is completely normal and part of the biological process of hair growth.
This guide walks you through every stage of recovery month by month, tells you what to expect, what to avoid, and when to contact your clinic.
The most important thing to know: Hair transplant results take 12 months to fully develop. Judging the outcome at 3 or 6 months is premature. The 12-month mark is when Este Leon conducts its guarantee assessment — because that is when final density is visible.
The Hair Growth Cycle After Transplant
Understanding the biology helps you stay calm during the process. Transplanted follicles go through three phases after implantation:
- Shock phase (weeks 2–8): The transplanted hairs shed — the follicle is "resetting." This is normal and expected.
- Dormant phase (months 2–4): The follicle rests underground. Nothing appears to be happening. This is the hardest psychological phase.
- Growth phase (months 3–12): New hairs emerge, thicken, and mature into permanent, natural hair.
Month-by-Month Recovery Timeline
-
D1–3
Days 1–3: Immediate Post-Procedure
Mild swelling around the forehead and eyes — peaks on day 2–3 and resolves by day 5. The recipient area has tiny red dots where grafts were placed. Sleep with head elevated at 45° to reduce swelling. Avoid touching the grafts. Your Este Leon coordinator will give you the first-wash protocol for day 3.
-
D4–14
Days 4–14: Crust Formation and Shedding
Small crusts form around each graft — this is the normal healing response. Begin gentle washing as instructed from day 3 onward. Crusts fall off naturally by day 7–14. The recipient area will look slightly pink or red. This fades over the following weeks. Do not pick or scratch crusts — let them fall on their own.
-
M1
Month 1: The "Shed" Begins
The transplanted hairs begin to shed. This is called shock loss and is completely normal — approximately 80–90% of transplanted hairs will shed. The follicle is alive and resting underground. Some existing hairs near the recipient area may also temporarily shed due to the physical stress of the procedure. This does not mean the transplant has failed.
-
M2–3
Months 2–3: The Dormant Phase
The area may look exactly as it did before the procedure, or even slightly thinner. The follicles are resting. This is psychologically the hardest phase — many patients worry unnecessarily. The follicles are alive; they simply have not started their new growth cycle yet. There is nothing to do except follow aftercare and wait.
-
M4
Month 4: New Growth Begins
Fine, thin new hairs begin to emerge from the transplanted follicles. They are soft and often lighter in colour initially. This is the beginning of the result. Not all grafts emerge simultaneously — growth is staggered over the next several months.
-
M6
Month 6: Visible Progress
Approximately 50–60% of final density is now visible. The hair has thickened and darkened. The hairline is forming. Many patients feel comfortable at this stage — the result is clearly coming. However, it is still not the final outcome.
-
M9
Month 9: Major Density Milestone
Around 75–80% of the final result is visible. The hair is close to its final texture and calibre. Most patients are very satisfied by this stage. The remaining 20% continues to develop over the next 3 months.
-
M12
Month 12: Final Result
Full density, natural texture, permanent hair. This is the Este Leon guarantee assessment point. If the result does not meet the written standard agreed before your procedure, we perform a complimentary correction at no cost.
What to Avoid and When
First 2 Weeks
- No touching, scratching, or picking the recipient area
- No direct sun on the recipient area
- No swimming, saunas, or steam rooms
- No strenuous exercise (raises blood pressure, increases bleeding risk)
- No alcohol (delays healing, thins blood)
- Sleep elevated (pillow under your head and neck to keep head higher than heart)
Weeks 3–4
- Light walking is fine; no gym or heavy lifting
- Use only recommended shampoos — no harsh chemicals
- Hat wearing is fine (loose-fitting, not tight baseball caps)
- Still avoid direct sun without coverage
Month 2 Onward
- Return to full normal exercise by weeks 4–6
- Normal shampooing and styling
- Sun protection (SPF 30+ on the scalp) recommended for 6 months
- Smoking significantly impairs graft survival — if you smoke, stop for at least 2 weeks before and after the procedure
When to contact your clinic: Contact Este Leon immediately if you experience signs of infection (significant warmth, pus, fever), severe pain not controlled by standard pain relief, or unusual bleeding after day 3. Minor redness, tenderness, and itching are normal and do not require contact.
The Este Leon 12-Month Follow-Up Protocol
All Este Leon patients receive follow-up consultations at 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, and 12 months after their procedure. These take place via video call or WhatsApp photo review — you do not need to return to Istanbul. Your coordinator monitors your progress at each stage and addresses any concerns.
